Situated on a scenic
4-acre parcel of land, the MacDonald House is one of the most historically significant buildings owned by the City of Vaughan.

It was once the home of famed Canadian painter, J.E.H. MacDonald, a founding member of the Group of Seven and his accomplished son, illustrator Thoreau MacDonald.

The house is named after long-time resident William Walton Armstrong (1916-2000), a painter of some note who enjoyed the company of several eminent Canadian artists including founding member of the famed Group of Seven, Arthur Lismer.

Located in the Thornhill Heritage Conservation District, this house was built in the 1870’s in the Gothic Revival style of the Victorian era and was clad with a roughcast stucco exterior.

This structure housed the municipality’s original township hall built in the hamlet of Vellore in 1845. In 1919, after World War 1, Vellore Township Hall became a memorial to the local men killed in the War; and a plaque to commemorate those who died was placed on the new brick façade featuring classical columns at the front.

The building was used for local municipal council meetings until 1943 when Council Chambers moved to their new offices in the community of Maple.
