VAUGHAN CLEANS UP DURING 20-MINUTE MAKEOVER

Vaughan Mayor Linda Jackson and Members of Council took part in the annual 20-Minute Vaughan Makeover held today at St. Elizabeth Catholic High School.

"I am proud to say that support for the 20-Minute Vaughan Makeover continues to grow," said Mayor Linda Jackson. "I think we must all be active when it comes to the environment, and with events like the 20-Minute Makeover, and our ongoing efforts to increase green bin use and recycling, we will continue to see a positive impact.  We should not only clean up our community on one day, but be conscious of our environment each and every day."

Beginning at 2 p.m., residents were asked to stop what they were doing and perform a 20-minute cleanup. The makeover involved litter collection and disposal around homes, businesses, schools and neighbourhoods in support of Earth Day.  This annual event continues to grow in Vaughan, with a 30% increase in participation in 2008 over 2007. This year more than 10,700 residents and 37 schools took part.

"I think this event shows just how important the environment is to everyone and like Earth Hour, it shows our commitment to improving the quality of life for our residents," said Regional Councillor Joyce Frustaglio, Chair of the Environment Committee. "The City of Vaughan is proud to be participating for the fourth consecutive year in this initiative."

Free garbage bags and plastic gloves were made available at the Civic Centre and at participating Pizza Pizza outlets in Vaughan. This year's local sponsors are The Promenade Shopping Centre, Canada's Wonderland and Pizza Pizza.
