Time-of-Use Rates have arrived in Vaughan

The price of your electricity use will now be calculated using new “Time-of-Use” (TOU) rates.

By using Time-of-Use rates to manage your electricity costs, you can help reduce the need for additional power generation during peak periods. Simple changes to your regular routine can help smooth those peaks and create real supply and environmental benefits.

For more information read Introducing Time-Of-Use Rates - A Quick Guide or visit www.powerstream.ca.

Working closely with local power distributor, PowerStream, the City of Vaughan is encouraging its residents and businesses to increase their energy efficiency and reduce their consumption. Through a variety of flexible, easy to implement programs, PowerStream saved 23,455,693 kilowatt hours of energy through conservation demand management (CDM) in 2006.

What is CDM? The idea behind CDM is to provide the tools and information necessary for individuals and businesses to effectively reduce their consumption, creating a conservation culture. These tools include:

Residential

  • The Great Refrigerator Roundup - removal of old, inefficient refrigerators free of charge
  • Watt Reader Loan Program - get a read on how much your appliances are costing you in electricity
  • peaksaverTM1 program - participating customers receive a programmable thermostat installed at no charge and $25

Business

  • Electricity Retrofit Incentive Program - incentive payments, of up to maximum of $250 per kilowatt saved, for large businesses that undergo energy-efficient retrofits of their buildings
  • Power Savings Blitz - free energy audits and up to $1,000 in energy-efficient upgrades for small businesses
  • Smart Suite Metering - conversion of bulk-metered multi-tenant buildings to individual suite meters

For more information on PowerStream programs visit: www.PowerStream.ca/conserve

What can you do to reduce your energy consumption, reduce CO2 emissions and save money?

  • In the winter, set your thermostat to 21ºC when you are in the house during the day, 18ºC when you are sleeping and 15ºC when you are out.
  • In the summer, set the thermostat in your house to 25.5 ºC and keep blinds and/or curtains drawn during the day.
  • Use energy-efficient, compact fluorescent light bulbs. They require less energy and last 10 times longer than regular bulbs.
  • Draft proof your home using weather stripping and locating sources of air leaks and drafts.
  • Information on financial incentives and grants for energy audits and retrofits is available through the Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario.
