Working closely with local power distributor,
PowerStream, the City of Vaughan is encouraging its residents and
businesses to increase their energy efficiency and reduce their
consumption. Through a variety of flexible, easy to implement programs,
PowerStream saved 23,455,693 kilowatt hours of
energy through conservation demand management (CDM) in 2006.
What is CDM? The idea behind CDM is to provide the tools and information
necessary for individuals and businesses to effectively reduce their
consumption, creating a conservation culture. These tools include:
Residential
- The Great Refrigerator Roundup - removal of old, inefficient
refrigerators free of charge
- Watt Reader Loan Program - get a read on how much your appliances
are costing you in electricity
- peaksaverTM1 program -
participating customers receive a programmable thermostat installed
at no charge and $25
Business
- Electricity Retrofit Incentive Program - incentive payments,
of up to maximum of $250 per kilowatt saved, for large businesses
that undergo energy-efficient retrofits of their buildings
- Power Savings Blitz - free energy audits and up to $1,000 in
energy-efficient upgrades for small businesses
- Smart Suite Metering - conversion of bulk-metered multi-tenant
buildings to individual suite meters

| What can you do to reduce your
energy consumption, reduce CO2 emissions and save money?
- In the winter, set your thermostat to 21ºC when
you are in the house during the day, 18ºC when you
are sleeping and 15ºC when you are out.
- In the summer, set the thermostat in your house to 25.5
ºC and keep blinds and/or curtains drawn during the
day.
- Use energy-efficient, compact fluorescent light bulbs.
They require less energy and last 10 times longer than regular
bulbs.
- Draft proof your home using weather stripping and locating
sources of air leaks and drafts.
- Information on financial incentives and grants for energy
audits and retrofits is available through the Government
of Canada and the Province
of Ontario.
