Smart Commute NTV Fast Facts
 
  • Award winning non-profit which partners with businesses in North Toronto, Vaughan to reduce traffic congestion, lower employment costs, improve air quality and foster healthier work environments while advocating for sustainable transportation

  • Formed in 2001 – Public/ Private partnership

  • Initially a pilot project; first TMA (Transportation Management Association) in Ontario; one of the first in Canada

  • Smart Commute NTV has a Board of Directors which provides strategic direction and financial, planning, marketing and transportation experience

  • Founding members/partners still involved today include: York University, Seneca@York, Knoll, TRCA, City of Toronto, City of Vaughan and York Region

  • New members/partners include: Transport Canada, Toronto Atmospheric Fund, Universal Workers Union Local 183, Environment Canada - Downsview, Parc Downsview Park, sanofi pasteur, Dillon Consulting, CH2M Hill, ING DIRECT and Enbridge Gas Distribution

  • Represents approximately 72,000 employees and students

  • Operates two TMA projects in Northwest Toronto, Vaughan and Northeast Toronto

  • Supports all forms of sustainable transportation infrastructure including high occupancy vehicle (HOV), bus-only and cycling lanes and rail-based transit systems

  • Collaborates with transit partners - GO Transit, TTC, YRT/VIVA

  • Encourages smart and sustainable growth strategies such as high-density and transit supportive development, bus rapid transit (BRT) and transportation hubs, all of which can reduce vehicle dependency

  • The Smart Commute Association is an umbrella organization that assists local TMAs across the Greater Toronto Area and Hamilton with capacity building. This larger initiative is, in part, based on the success of Smart Commute NTV. The SCA also assists in reporting and monitoring, development of program modules, operation issues and standards, communications messaging and information sharing.

  • Collaborates with existing and emerging TMAs through the Smart Commute Initiative (SCI). The Smart Commute Association (SCA) and the Smart Commute Initiative are supported by Transport Canada's Urban Transportation Showcase Program and participating municipalities
