Asian Long Horned Beetle Collection Restrictions
The City of Vaughan continues to work with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) to monitor the outbreak of the Asian Long-horned Beetle (ALHB). As of the date of this letter, the ALHB Regulated Area (in Vaughan) is delineated by Hwy. 27 to the west, Rutherford Rd. to the north, Dufferin St. to the east and Steeles Ave. to the south.
While the insect presents no threat to public health, the beetle does pose a significant threat to Canada's hardwood trees and forests. The larvae feed within tree trunks and limbs and will eventually kill the trees.
In order to stop the spread of the ALHB, parts of Toronto and Vaughan that have been affected by the ALHB are federally regulated via the 'Infested Place Order, 2004'. Under this Ministerial Order, the movement of firewood, nursery stock, trees, branches, logs, fall leaves, lumber, wood chips and bark from ALHB regulated area is prohibited by law without the written consent of the CFIA. Moving the material could spread the Asian Long-horned Beetle (ALHB).
For permission to move regulated material, please contact the CFIA at 1-800-442-2342. For more information about the ALHB, refer to the CFIA's website at www.inspection.gc.ca.
For information about the disposal options for leaf and yard material (both inside and outside the ALHB Regulated Area), please contact the York Region at 1-877-464-9675 or visit www.york.ca/waste. |
