Non Collectible Waste

An overview of non collectible waste is provided below. For a comprehensive list of non collectible waste, please refer to the City’s Waste Collection By-law 217-2010.

  • Household Hazardous Waste (HHW): Hazardous Waste MUST NOT be placed in the garbage bins / recycling toters collected by the City. This includes materials labeled corrosive; poisonous; toxic or flammable, including paints, pesticides, propane tanks, batteries, cleaning products, fluorescent light tubes, energy efficient light bulbs, pharmaceuticals, motor oils and filters. Acceptable Household Hazardous Waste can be taken to York Region’s HHW drop off depots. For more information visit www.york.ca/waste
  • Recycling Material: Acceptable Recycling Material MUST NOT be placed in the garbage bins collected by the City. All recycling materials accepted in the City’s municipal recycling collection program MUST be set out for recycling collection.
  • Designated Electronic and Electrical Waste: Residents are strongly encouraged NOT to place designated electrical and electronic waste in the garbage bins. York Region accepts an extensive list of electronic and electrical equipment at their Community Environmental Centre located at 130 McCleary Court in Vaughan for recycling. Accepted materials include: computers, monitors, printers, scanners, electronic games, photocopiers, fax machines, cameras, VCRs, DVDs, televisions, tuners, audio speakers etc. For more information visit www.york.ca/waste
  • Leaf and Yard Waste: Leaf and Yard Waste, including grass clippings, sod, tree stumps, branches and root balls are NOT collected by the City. Owners / Property Managers are to seek a private landscape contractor and / or compost facility licensed to haul / receive subject material.
  • Liquid Waste: Liquid Waste MUST NOT be placed in the garbage bins / recycling toters collected by the City. Owners / Property Managers are to seek a private contractor licensed to haul / receive subject material.
  • Clean fill: Clean fill Waste, including concrete products, bricks, stones, asphalt, and dirt MUST NOT be placed in the garbage bins / recycling toters collected by the City. Small quantities of these materials may be taken to York Region’s Community Environmental Centre located at 130 McCleary Court in Vaughan. For more information visit www.york.ca/waste Alternatively, contact a clean fill landfill or seek a private transfer station licensed to haul / receive subject material.
  • Automotive Waste: Automotive Waste, including tires MUST NOT be placed in the garbage bins / recycling toters collected by the City. Owners / Property Managers are to seek a private transfer station or an automotive scrap metal dealer licensed to haul / receive subject material.
  • Medical and Pathological Waste: Medical and Pathological Waste, including sharps (needles) MUST NOT be placed in the garbage bins / recycling toters collected by the City. Owners / Property Managers are to seek a private biomedical waste disposal company or call York Region at 1-877-464-9675.
  • Trade Waste: Trade Waste MUST NOT be placed in the garbage bins / recycling toters collected by the City. Trade Waste includes construction and demolition waste, renovation material, windows, glass, lumber, roofing shingles, dry wall, etc. Trade Waste may be taken to York Region’s Community Environmental Centre located at 130 McCleary Court in Vaughan www.york.ca/waste or to a private transfer station licensed to haul / receive subject material.

REMINDER: TERMINATION OF COLLECTION SERVICES
Collection services may be temporarily terminated should non collectible items be found in garbage bins/recycling toters collected by the City.
