Cultural Heritage Night was held recently at the City of Vaughan Civic Centre as part of Heritage Week celebrations. The Heritage Vaughan Committee hosted the event in coordination with Vaughan City Council to recognize individuals for their efforts in the area of heritage conservation in Vaughan.
The Acting Mayor and Members of Council, with the assistance of the Heritage Vaughan Committee, presented honorary awards to the 2009 Vaughan Heritage Preservation Awards recipients and prizes to the winners of the Heritage Vaughan Elementary and High School Art Contest. ?Cultural Heritage night provides an opportunity for residents to commemorate the history of Vaughan, its buildings and landmarks, and the people that have contributed to its unique heritage and culture,? said Mayor Linda Jackson. ?The City is honouring citizens who have helped preserve Vaughan?s history and celebrating students who have reflected our heritage in beautiful artwork on this special night during Heritage Week.? This year?s recipients included Peter Edrey for the renovation for the existing building at 39 Centre Street within the Thornhill Heritage Conservation District, and Tobi and Richard Hahn for the renovation of the existing house at 143 Brooke Street within the Thornhill Heritage Conservation District. ?It was a very special evening and I was delighted to present the recipients with their heritage preservation awards,? said Regional Councillor and Acting Mayor Joyce Frustaglio at the event. ?The Vaughan Heritage Preservation Awards program was adopted by Council in 1989 to grant awards to individuals and organizations for outstanding contributions to the preservation of heritage and cultural resources in Vaughan.?
