The following services are available during the tornado cleanup to affected residents.
Community Information Centres In order to assist residents who were impacted by the recent tornadoes, the Canadian Red Cross with support from The Regional Municipality of York and the City of Vaughan has set up Information and Referral Centres. These Centres will provide impacted residents with referrals and assist with needs assessments. All residents affected by the tornado are requested to register at one of the Information and Referral Centres. Information and Referral Centres will be open on Tuesday August 25, 2009 until Saturday, September 12, 2009. Below are the locations and times: Father Ermanno Bulfon Community Centre 8141 Martin Grove Rd, Woodbridge Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm Saturday August 29, 2009 from 10:00 am ? 2:00 pm Maple Community Centre 10190 Keele Street, Maple Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:00 pm ? 8:00 pm Saturday September 12, 2009 from 10:00 am ? 2:00 pm Information and Referral Centres will not be open on Sundays, Saturday September 5, 2009 and Monday September 7, 2009. Canadian Red Cross Donations The Canadian Red Cross will be coordinating the collection and distribution of donations received to support residents impacted by the tornado. If you are interested in making a cash donation, call the Red Cross Donation Line at 1-800-418-1111, visit www.redcross.ca, or mail a cheque earmarked 2009 Ontario Tornado Appeal to Canadian Red Cross, 5700 Cancross Court, Mississauga, Ontario, L5R 3E9. Storm Debris The City of Vaughan will lift the item limit on waste disposal for the areas affected by the storm. Residents will be allowed up to six items without the requirement for additional paid tags for two weeks, ending September 4. This is collectible waste only and should not include items that would not normally be picked up. Residents should be aware that the City of Vaughan does not clean up private tree debris on private property. Homeowners are encouraged to contact their insurance company in regards to property cleanup. York Region is extending the hours of the McCleary Court Community Environmental Centre and Asian Longhorned Beetle Yard Waste Drop-off facility in Vaughan to assist residents with clean-up efforts. Residents and small business owners may drop-off storm debris at the McCleary Court CEC, while contractors may drop-off yard waste at the ALHB facility. The McCleary Court CEC, located at 130 McCleary Court in the City of Vaughan, will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days per week. Fees will be waived until September 4. The CEC will be expanding the types of materials it accepts to include storm clean-up yard waste. Residents are encouraged, where possible, to separate their storm debris into these categories for recycling: ? Yard Waste: trees, limbs, branches, leaves, plants, sod ? Scrap Metal: metal railings, sheds, and metal flashing ? Dimensional lumber: must be clean and not painted ? Concrete and Rubble: broken patio stones ? Clean Fill: dirt and earth, must be clean ? Debris: all other waste that cannot be separated and requires landfill disposal Contractors who are commissioned to clean-up yard debris for their customers can send their yard waste to the ALHB Yard Waste Drop-off facility, located at 8000 Dufferin Street (just south of Highway 407 on the west side) in the City of Vaughan. Hours have been expanded from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days per week. The facility will accept tree limbs and branches leftover from the storm. Drop-off rates will still be in effect.
