Vaughan Council recently welcomed Ali Fatehzadah as the City’s fifth Youth Councillor.
“On behalf of Council, I’d like to welcome Ali and congratulate him on his appointment as the City’s newest Youth Councillor,” said Mayor Linda Jackson. “Ali will be a valuable part of our team as he assists us in increasing voter turnout in the next municipal election, particularly with our younger voters.” Vaughan was the first City in Canada to create a Youth Councillor position to increase the involvement of young people in municipal affairs. The term of the newest appointment runs from September 2009 to January 2010. Mr. Fatehzadah will attend and participate in Council meetings, with the exception of closed sessions, and will sit as a non-voting Member. He may also participate in official ceremonial functions. Mr. Fatehzadah attends Maple High School and has a keen interest in politics. Vaughan Council created the position of Youth Councillor in December 2005. “We look forward to working with Ali and providing him with the opportunity to learn more about the role and importance of municipal government,” said City Manager Clayton Harris. “Ali will highlight the issues affecting young people and bring their concerns before Council. Together, our goal is to generate interest and involve more youth – our future leaders – in the civic process.”
