YONGE STREET STUDY
Purpose:
The Town of Markham and the City of Vaughan jointly initiated the
Thornhill Yonge Street Study in 2002, to develop a streetscape master
plan to enhance the physical quality and retail strength of the
Yonge Street corridor within historic Thornhill. The study is being
undertaken by a team of planners, urban designers, landscape architects
and retail analysts led by Urban Strategies Inc.
Timeframe:
The study began in 2002.
Current Status:
The study began with a Community Visioning Workshop, held in February
2003, revealing that many people share a vision for Yonge Street
as a vibrant, pedestrian oriented corridor that can attract new
investment and become a great place for people to visit. Based on
this input, the study team generated several streetscape and redevelopment
scenarios including design options for the proposed Yonge Street
Transit Way. These proposals were further refined at a series of
Community Open Houses and Workshops held in May and July 2003.
The Study has been approved by Council and a Public Hearing was completed to implement a number of key recommendations, including that detailed Urban Design Guidelines be prepared for each component of the Study Area based on the recommended policy framework outlined in this study. These
