| Vaughan is one of the
fastest growing cities in Canada. The City is reviewing ward boundaries
to fairly reflect population shifts and growth. Left as is, the
population distribution under the existing ward structure will become
significantly disproportionate over time. (Existing
Ward Population Projection) The purpose of the Public Meeting
is to seek your input on various ward boundary options for implementation
beginning with the 2010 general Municipal Election.
Council at its meeting of February 24, 2009 considered staff's
report containing refined options for five and six ward boundary
configurations. The following options will be presented at a Public
Meeting on March 9, 2009 at 7:00 pm in the Council Chambers at 2141
Major Mackenzie Drive.
Each of the ward options contain population estimates. These population
projections have been developed as a method to measure population
distribution among the proposed wards at each of the next three
municipal elections - 2010, 2014 and 2018. Base data for the population
was taken from the 2006 Census. Using the population projections
in OPA # 600 for the new urban areas, along with consultation with
Urban Design and Policy Planning Department and Engineering staff,
population projections were developed for the City at each of the
next 3 elections. These projections were applied to specific areas
of the City where development is proposed so that growth within
each ward could be estimated.
The population projections set out in the ward options are not
intended to be exact forecasted populations for a ward at each election
date, but rather are to be used as a tool to evaluate the equitable
distribution of population amongst the proposed wards as the City's
population grows. Actual development patterns will vary, but for
the time periods under consideration the variations are not considered
to be significant. For example, the ward boundary review assumes
that intensification within each ward will occur on a roughly equal
basis across the City.We are unable to predict with any certainty
where the infill development will occur, and so, while we assume
infill development will be spread across the City on an equal basis,
no additional population attributed to infill is included in the
projections.
