The City of Vaughan is a green community committed
to the health of our environment through the development of healthy
public strategies such as the Pesticide Free Vaughan Policy. In
June 2007, Vaughan Council adopted a recommendation to allow staff
to further examine preventing the use of cosmetic pesticides on
private property. The recommendation proposed that a public and
stakeholder consultation process be established and conducted over
several months and a draft bylaw be created and presented to the
Environment Committee regarding the elimination of non-essential
use of chemical pesticides on private property.
Since 2001, over 250 municipalities across Canada have passed bylaws
prohibiting the use of pesticides after the Supreme Court of Canada
upheld a bylaw banning their application . During this time, Vaughan
began educational programs to help residents achieve a healthy,
weed-free lawn without the use of pesticides and stopped using them
in Ward 4 and 5 parks. By 2005, all the City's parks were pesticide
free.
