Vaughan Vision 2020 Establishes Future Direction of the City
Our strategic plan, Vaughan Vision 2020, sets out the overall direction and guiding principles for the City’s future. It is a living document that can be amended and changed over time. Vaughan Vision also outlines the City’s priorities for the next decade and sets a timetable for meeting those deadlines.
Since the plan was finalized in December 2007, a great many strategic objectives have been met. The City launched Vaughan Tomorrow, its growth management strategy, which encompasses all the areas that will have an impact on how the City takes shape. All of these areas will have Master Plans that will guide us and help ensure that the overall vision can be achieved.
Several of these Master Plans have now been completed and launched. Green Directions Vaughan, the City’s Community Sustainability and Environmental Master Plan, is a made-in-Vaughan approach to ensure a healthy environment, vibrant communities and economic vitality for current and future generations.
Active Together is our Master Plan for the Provision of Recreation, Culture, Parks, Facilities and Libraries. It has also been completed and approved and ensures that these services remain important contributors to the high quality of life in Vaughan. A major component of this plan is the Sports

and Physical Activity Plan. It promotes healthy and active lifestyles and establishes targets for increased participation in physical activities.
The City has also established a Human Resources strategy and an Infrastructure Management System, and approved a strategy for the utilization of City-owned historical buildings by the community. We have also finalized a strategy to strengthen youth participation in civic government and have just completed a ward boundary review to enhance democratic equity.
The City will maintain its current five wards, but a question will be added to the 2010 municipal ballot asking residents if they would support a sixth ward in the City of Vaughan.
The work continues on many more projects. They include a comprehensive e-government strategy to ensure citizens have access to municipal government services 24-7 and an accessibility plan as mandated under the Ontarians with Disabilities Act.
To ensure that the Vaughan Vision grows and evolves to reflect the views and opinions of the community, we continue to reach out to you – our residents and businesses.
Within this framework, City officials to date have met with representatives from many sectors of the community, including the Seniors’ Association of Vaughan Initiative (SAVI), youth, school councils, the Chamber of Commerce and ratepayers associations.
The event included a presentation on the Vaughan Vision 2020 process and the key strategic initiatives for 2009. It also included a review of the key successes from 2008. Those in attendance actively participated in an open discussion where they had the opportunity to identify their concerns and/or express their appreciation for services provided by the City of Vaughan. This process will continue and we will be outreaching to other sectors of the community in the fall of 2009.
