Having Your Say on the City's Future

How can we make sure Vaughan grows in the right way in order to reach its potential? With your help. By participating in the planning process, residents and businesses can have a significant impact on the viability and future prosperity of our great City.

The City of Vaughan is currently in the midst of an Official Plan Review which will set out where and how Vaughan will grow. The key difference here is a new process of citizen engagement. We are reaching out to residents and businesses and community groups – we want your input into how this City will become a major urban centre.

How have we been doing this? We have held Speaker Series with academics and experts and we are holding workshops in every community to find out what you think of the new Official Plan. In March, representatives of community groups and Vaughan-based organizations attended a special evening of presentations about that future vision. They viewed Voices For Transformation, the documentary film, and held a group discussion on how to best grow the City.

In May, there was a public open house at the Eagles Nest Golf Club for the new Official Plan featuring “Where and How Vaughan Will Grow” and the Vaughan Transportation Master Plan.

This event offered a chance to hear what the project consultants are working on in regards to the new Official Plan. It also served as the first Public Consultation Centre for the launch of the Transportation Master Plan (TMP) Class Environmental Assessment Study.

The Official Plan Review is about more than just building our city out. It is also about planning a complex city of diverse and rich cultures that is home to a variety of people with different needs. As Vaughan continues to grow in size, so too will the social services needs of its residents. To meet those needs, Vaughan Council has approved a Social Services Study as part of the new Vaughan Official Plan.

Traditionally, social services have not been a local municipal service, but with our comprehensive plan the Social Services Study will be an important

component of a sustainable approach to planning for the future needs of our growing community.

The Study will address the social service requirements of all Vaughan residents. It will identify the challenges currently being faced and how the current system meets the needs of our citizens. It will determine the gaps in the delivery of social services and also focus on developing a strategy towards ensuring the future provision of social services to better meet the needs of our community.

Over the coming year there will be more opportunities for you to become involved in the new Official Plan process. Public meetings and events will be scheduled to keep residents informed and involved as this important plan continues to take shape. It is an exciting time for the City of Vaughan and a great time to be an involved citizen.
