Moving Forward with Vaughan Vision 2020

One of the best ways to succeed at anything is to have a vision, a goal to be obtained at the completion of a plan. Our strategic plan, Vaughan Vision 2020, is our vision for the future. It establishes the City’s mission, vision and corporate values and outlines the strategic goals and initiatives. It sets clear priorities for the City and establishes a timetable for meeting those deadlines.

How are we doing? The City is making very good progress on all the strategic initiatives and master plans. The next challenge is for the City’s Senior Management Team and the Strategic Planning Committee to work together and arrive at a priority list for all the master plans.  It is imperative that we act on these plans – the Official Plan Review, Environmental Master Plan, Transportation Master Plan, Employment Sectors Strategy, Active Together Master Plan, the Long-Term Financial Plan, Water and Sewer Master Plan, and the Storm Water/Drainage Master Plan.

Many of these plans are complete or nearing completion, and now need to begin being implemented in a sustainable, logical and meaningful way for the City. The plans will influence every aspect of the City, from level and standard of service, to the budget

process and organizational structure, with the end goal of improving efficiency and effectiveness. The City is committed to ensuring the successful transition from ideas to reality.

In order to make it work, we will need to continue reach out to you – our residents and businesses, for your input. Public engagement is the key to the success of this process and will ensure that the direction in which the City is going remains current and relevant. In October, a Vaughan Vision 2020 Successes Meeting was held to allow residents to offer their views on the City’s future direction.

Participants learned about the City’s major milestones and achievements for 2008 and 2009, and they provided comments on the City’s priorities for 2010.

Reporting back to the community has also been identified as an important part of the process. The City published its 2008 Successes Report, which was discussed at the meeting, and future accomplishments will be captured in the 2009 Successes Report. This report allows us to report back on the City’s successes and provide an update on the progress being made on key initiatives and programs.

A one-day workshop will also be held in the spring of 2010 for Members of Council and the Senior Management Team to hear from experts on strategic issues. As with past workshops, this one will continue the education of Members of Council and the Senior Management Team and include discussions to better understand organizational strengths, weaknesses and opportunities.
