| Profile
Councillor Iafrate has made Vaughan her home for more than three decades. Besides raising a family, she has been an active participant in the community, dedicating her time to help improve the quality of life for everyone in the City of Vaughan.
Community Spirit
Marilyn embodies community spirit. Her enthusiastic participation in so many community events both in Maple and Kleinburg has earned her the City of Vaughan’s Volunteer of the Year award for seven consecutive years. Helping with community BBQs, championing the need to support local heritage buildings, organizing tours to the local mosque, celebrating Canada Day in Kleinburg or just participating in walks, runs and other fundraising initiatives, are all part of fostering community spirit which she believes is the essence of a good, responsible and caring community.
Social
Marilyn is currently a member of the York Central Hospital Language Advisory Panel working on matters dealing with language barriers for patients. She remains involved in the Compass Project, a joint Region of York and School Boards initiative, designed to provide much needed social programs to the Maple community for both parents and children. Making children smile is also high on Marilyn's priority list, which is why she continues to support the Maplefest summer festival, a 25-plus year tradition, Santafest (Vaughan’s annual Santa Claus parade) as well as volunteering and supporting a local community group to fundraise efforts for cancer research and the purchase of cancer treatment equipment for the new Vaughan hospital.
Environment
Marilyn has always understood that we are all guardians of the environment, which we have inherited, and that this environment must be preserved and protected for future generations. She fought relentlessly, first as a member and later as president of Vaughan CARES, to do her part in safeguarding the environment.
She is also a supporter of York Region’s Community Environmental Centre (CEC) in Vaughan and is proud to have been part of this initiative which provides residents with disposal alternatives for materials not taken at the curbside, and which will have a positive impact on reducing illegal dumping in the rural community of Vaughan.
Education
As a member of the Provincial Parent Board, an advisory body to the Minister of Education, Marilyn was able to bring the voice of parents to the Provincial table, with great success. Her cooperative work with the Maple schools has created a body of parents able to speak on behalf of over 5,500 families.
