MATCH
SAFETY
From the beginning of time, people have had a fascination with
fire. It’s fun to sit around a campfire and watch the flames and
sparks as a pine log burns. This fascination sometimes leads curious
young children to experiment with fire.
Children often watch their parents light candles, gas stoves
and BBQ’s and do not realize the difference between a safe, controlled
flame and one that is unsafe. They also love to watch the different
color flames produced as different materials burn. Children often
hide matches or cigarette lighters to experiment with when adults
do not supervise them. Without the common sense of an adult, children
may experiment with dangerous flammable liquids or build a fire
in a clothes closet or take their experiment outside.
As responsible parents, we can prevent our children from playing
with matches or lighters by:
-
Keeping matches and lighters out of the reach
of young children.
-
Educating them as soon as they are able to
understand about the dangers of fire.
-
Let your children know that you will try to
answer their questions/curiosity about how things burn.
-
Tell them about controlled burning in a safe
environment.
