| The
City of Vaughan is an active proponent of traffic calming in the Greater
Toronto Area. Over the past several years, more than 100 speed humps,
raised crosswalks and other measures have been implemented with the assistance
of 25 separate Neighbourhood Traffic Committees. At least 20 other Neighbourhood
Traffic Committees are in the process of developing traffic calming plans
or waiting for their implementation.
Traffic calming can be defined as the combination
of physical measures that reduce the negative effects of motor vehicle
use, alter motorist behaviour and improve conditions for non-motorized
street users.
Traffic calming:
- Reduces traffic speeds
- Reduces the number and severity of collisions
- Improves safety and convenience for pedestrians and cyclists
- Creates environmental improvements
- Reduces the volume of traffic
