O CANADA - NATION'S BIRTHDAY DRAWS RECORD CROWD IN VAUGHAN

A record crowd of residents and visitors celebrated Canada's 143rd birthday at the City of Vaughan's Canada Day celebration on Thursday, July 1, 2010 at Mackenzie Glen District Park in Maple.

"We are excited to have featured two Juno-nominated artists this year at Canada Day with performances by Karl Wolf and Faber Drive," said Mayor Linda Jackson. "The City is extremely proud to continue to offer our residents top-notch family entertainment, all free-of-charge."

Presented by TD Music and the event sponsor Liberty Development, Canada Day's free stage entertainment kicked off with the Bonus Brothers, a tribute to the Jonas Brothers, followed by the Official Welcome by Members of Council. Other performers included Vaughan resident Tajja Isen who sang the national anthem.

R&B/Soul Artist Karl Wolf performed at 5 p.m. and opened for the featured performers of the evening, Juno-nominated band Faber Drive who took centre stage at 6:30 p.m. Both artists surprised audiences with an autograph signing session.

"By all accounts the City's Canada Day celebration was a resounding success," said City Manager Clayton Harris. "Events such as this require many months of coordination and I congratulate all staff for their efforts, most especially the team in Corporate Communications for producing this highly anticipated event."

Other activities included a family BBQ, a free Kidz Zone with inflatables, an interactive gaming tent, face painting courtesy of Bell, arts and crafts, pizza-making workshop courtesy of Pizza Nova, playground, water park and much more. A free VIVA/YRT transit shuttle bus was provided.
