The City of Vaughan is introducing you to some of the teams that work hard to support the residents and businesses that call this vibrant community home! Today, we’re sharing everything to know about Solid Waste Management

This unit is part of the Environmental Services department within the Office of Deputy City Manager, Public Works. This office goes above and beyond to provide the community with front-line services for our roads, parks, forests, waterways, and more, which safeguard and enhance the quality of life in our growing city.

So, what does Solid Waste Management do?

Solid Waste Managementis a small but mighty team of dedicated individuals passionate about their work. They provide residential garbage, leaf and yard waste, blue box recycling, green bin organics, large bulky items and metal appliance collections to approximately 105,000 Vaughan homes, including multi-residential locations.

They are a forward-thinking team that focuses on reducing waste through service changes, education and innovative thinking. With enhancements like the Gold Star recycling program, where staff provide educational feedback cards to residents, to expanding the organics collection program in the multi-residential sector, this team continues to champion project improvements.

Solid Waste Management is also responsible for delivering the annual Waste Collection Schedule, which is one of the City’s most important print publications. The 2023 Waste Collection Schedule was awarded Bronze in the Municipal Waste Association’s 2023 Promotion and Education Awards in the Print Tool category.

Providing Service Excellence remains at the forefront of everything this group does, especially when responding to resident service requests and inquiries, and seeking creative ways to host and engage residents in waste reduction events and initiatives.

The City is a leader in waste management, and the Solid Waste Management team plays a critical role in waste reduction and diversion education. Through yearly proclamations such as Waste Reduction Week and Plastic-Free July, as well as City-led programs such as Curbside Giveaway Days and Waste-Less Virtual Visits, this group is committed to protecting the environment and fostering a sustainable future.
